Sarah Strohmeyer, The Sleeping Beauty Proposal is genius.
Inside the Cover
Eugenia Genie Michaels is an Admissions Counsellor at Thoreau College. She has been dating professor and literary author Hugh Spencer for four years. Genie has supported him finically and emotionally, and has been waiting patiently for him to propose.
Hugh writes a bestseller and does a number of interviews. While being interviewed by Barbara Walters, he is put on the spot to propose to his girlfriend. The person whom he phones is not Genie. But her friends, parents, relatives and everyone who watched the interview believe that Genie is the lucky girl.
Genie is so distraught and feels humiliated. She telephones Hugh, who fled to England, to ask him why. He finally confesses that he has been having an affair; he informed her that he really did not commit to her, and to add to the hurt and insult, he told her that he never found her sexually attractive.
Patty Pugliese, Genie’s best friend and Lawyer, visits Genie with Tequila in hand to support her friend through this difficulty time. Since everyone believes that Genie was the recipient of the proposal, Patty suggests that Genie should pretend she is engaged. To keep the deception real, Genie buys a ring and sets an imaginary wedding date.
While everyone thinks Genie is getting married, she is treated differently by her family and co-workers. People are calling to congratulate her, they send her presents, and her mother and sister rush to help with wedding arrangements. Genie finally feels free from the pressures of marriage. With the pressure lifted and the honest feedback she got from her ex, Genie slowly reinvents herself.
Genie has been eyeing the cottage that her brother and his friend Nick have been working on, and before it goes to market, she and Patty show up to make a deal. While at the cottage, Genie notices how gorgeous Nick really is and the chemistry between the two heats up.
How long can Genie keep up the charade? Will she buckle under all the guilt?
Humour, deception, chemistry, twists and turns, keeps the reader guessing till the end.
